Oil and Water

From where to where the question spins.

A roar of throttle run aways.

Escape is energy enough,

Escape and mysteries in rain.

They split the emptiness of streets,

And leave their molten lines of tar.

Like Carver’s “Elephant” in flight,

The tyres barely touch the road.

Refractions in a thinning slick:

The life before has slipped and bloomed,

And through its rainbows run the tales.

They leave behind their drying tracks.

The stories we can only guess,

Or write our own escapes instead.

Reverberations

You take a step, the Earth slips back.

It’s never fair, it rarely is,

But just in case you didn’t know:

It’s in your eyes I see my life.

The sadnesses which came before,

The solitary walks at night,

The sleeping rough beside the cliffs

Were never yours: you gave me life.

I measure out the speeding years

Like feet and inches on a wall:

Each notch another pain or joy.

And so our Earth is spinning by.

Again, in case you weren’t aware,

In your young life there lies the point.

The Sylph of Air and Time

Between the treetops time has curves

Where decades twine like blackbird’s songs,

Where centuries are interlaced,

And pasts are born from future space.

To work the weave you sway with trees,

And wind your mind up through the leaves.

Your neurons switch from time through time,

Through interlinking rings which bind.

In them you’ll live what might have been,

And twist back out through what is not:

All knowledge of the lives and deaths,

Are hanging in the forest’s breaths.

The chaos of this heavy air

Creates the mirage we see there.

Song 10: All Things Must Pass

The fear and pain, the joy and love,

And everything we ever love,

Unfurls the universe of love:

We pass away, and we are love.

The scent of wood smoke from the fire;

Through frosted glass, a shooting star;

A flock of sparrows in the snow;

A note you wrote ten years ago.

I read the tales of Gilgamesh,

See broken hearts on river beds.

I walk the ancient woodland ways,

My worth is breath, my nights are days.

A life is made as seconds pass,

The birds all know their songs don’t last.

Marram

We walked across the gap of time,

And swapped our myths of broken words.

Our bodies moved within one space:

This void between these walls we shared.

We held a century in our grasp:

The wars and births and distant dreams.

We shared a common pause for thought,

And watched the skies turn gold and grey.

We wasted hours and waited years,

And breathed Atlantic weather fronts.

The tree – which rattled Autumn’s last –

Was yours and mine, but never ours.

Between the sands which marked our lives,

The binding roots of blood and breath.

The Song of Ondine (The Cost)

She wasn’t singing for the Earth,

She wasn’t singing for the Air,

She wasn’t singing for our lives,

So no, we didn’t hear the song.

But villages were swept away,

And islands sank beneath the waves,

And deltas spread and countries shrank,

And still we didn’t hear the song.

And drinking water filled with salt,

And wars were fought for muddy wells,

And millions were left to rot,

And still we didn’t hear the song.

Our links have broken, language lost,

Without the song we count the cost.
