Gwen John

Of all the moments, there you were:

Alone in thoughts, and thoughts alone,

With lessons learned in fields of corn,

With pasts to run from, pasts which form.

Alone in knowing reverie.

An open book of worlds to touch.

Alone and deeper still, within:

Those worlds of darkness, warmth and words.

From Bordeaux, running field to field,

Remember all those tainted hopes?

From Britain, homeless, drifting, cold,

Whilst all around was burning light

That strength once learned has found its poise:

A stillness brought from years of pain.

Two Modes of Study

Precise amounts of manganese

Dissolved with hormones: scattered truths.

Across a desk a mound of facts,

A half constructed proof of tears.

The counted words, the research notes,

The Harvard Referenced quotes for weight,

The nights of struggle pushed aside,

The memories lost in paper balls.

Just here – this eye can tell it all –

Each gram of iron, each lonely year,

Ionic tales of grief and thought.

The study skips between two states,

But soon must fold back on its tracks,

Its solitudes and sufferings.

Lasting

We’ll waste our few remaining nights,

Enjoy the pointlessness of sleep,

Then call on friends we’d lost to time,

On days we should be fighting for.

We’ll make our pacts we know we’ll break.

We’ll tell our loved ones nothing new:

Revealing any more would just

Leave them with more questions.

And then we’ll turn our faces up

To sun or clouds, to stars or snow.

We’ll kiss the rain and know it’s true.

As if we had one moment more.

We’ll run the emerald fronds of plants

Through fingers touched by magic.

The Bud

Do not delay, don’t wait for word,

The spring will burst the tightest buds

Without you. Summer dries the stream

Without you. Autumn takes the breath

Of swallows – late to leave. And death

Will strike with winter ice and waste

The final throes of sun, and then

You’ll miss your time to effervesce.

Do not be caught in thoughts of lives

Which could have meant much more than this,

Which could have been, but passed you by.

The buds are leaves, are mould, are gone,

And you are watching as they dry.

Become the leaf, return to bud.

Questions on a Homeless Night

I wonder

Have you ever been alone?

Just you, a cliff, an empty sea,

A past and future lost for words,

A pallid memory of the sun.

To feel the swell of night’s updraft,

The pull of moon towards the tide,

The drag of skeletons in chalk,

The thought you never had the time.

And have you ever found the strength

In silence, stars and drifting gulls?

And knowing there is only you:

Just you, a cliff, an empty sea.

The silver waves and shingle roar:

I wonder, has your life meant more?

Limit of Learning (They Took the Sky)

Those skies were never meant to end.

Off west the distant Irish coast,

And east the millstone cities smoke:

Horizons wide enough for dreams.

Then came the day they closed the sky:

One little push, one breeze to blow.

They left the air but took the far,

So less and less would raise their heads.

Together we would wish the Earth,

Instead were left with measured ground,

And shivered at the thought of worlds

Beyond the confines of our plots.

We reached, we yearned, we stared, we learned:

And then they took away the sky.
