The Alchemy of Rains

They saw the signs: the swelling seas,

The bloodied skies, the shaken trees.

They shut their eyes, they shut them tight,

In silence sought the simple light.

They hid their houses high in hills,

While down below the valleys filled.

They closed their hearts, they closed their minds,

In isolation cut their binds.

They fled before the falling fear,

Made anguished cries so god’s might hear.

They ran away, they ran so fast:

Ran from their futures and their pasts.

The Ondine flooded out their homes,

The Sylph made patterns from their bones.

Coins for the Crossing

My fingertips have sensed the space

Between the rocks, beneath the grass,

And there the roots have taken sky,

And oceans push the dreams aside.

And in my heart I know you’re here.

Whoever: you have left your trace,

Its joy and peace around my home:

I feel your warmth and know your fear.

The aura floods with flashing words.

I hold the pen, it moves itself.

The paper pulls, it flows with song,

The gentle glow has found its voice.

At times like these I lose my mind.

At times like these I’m glad I’m blind.

The Song of Ondine (Tundra Swans)

She called them down, the winter swans,

To gather on her flooded fields.

The final touch of Autumn sun

Made strings of pearls from lines of birds.

She whispered knowledge through the flocks:

A dew as soft as cotton grass,

She brought the sound of distant waves,

And samphire scented morning mists.

The fields spread out from hills to sea,

And on each field a thousand swans,

A thousand tundra tales to tell,

And with each tale she made a song.

They stayed through snows the Winter long,

Lamenting wilderness and sun.
