Between Stations

I sit between points A and B,

And watch the rooks begin to roll,

Across the fields, all scattered leaves.

We pass them by, they fill my mind,

With thoughts of wings and freer things.

We journey by the forest track

And see the beech and maple turn,

With golden branches trailed in shade.

And yesterday will come again,

With all the love and hope alive,

And none of this will then have been,

And we would take a different train.

I sit between points A and B,

I close my eyes and feel life pass.

Melencholia I (Dürer’s Angel)

The comet tail has sliced the sky,

And rainbows with it sink the sun

Beneath a springing autumn tide:

A will which never will become.

The dust of spirits coat the walls

And count from numbered square to square.

Their flightless wings, which trick the skies,

Dissolve her memories into time.

And all around there lays the wreck

Of love and art, which break apart,

And carve their sorry tales away,

Into the pointlessness of life.

With watered crown and weighted wings,

She leans her heavy bones on bone.

Song 1: Souvenir

The forests where the adder slept,

And where my loneliness found peace,

Were rich with beechwood Sunday rains,

And softened by the Autumn songs.

The drip of drums through scented larch.

A fractured truth which filled my heart.

Escape and acorns broke the hold

Of screaming homes and severed schools.

I ate the beauty of the earth:

Russula, Parasol and Cep,

I gleaned the music picking hope

In melodies which set me free.

For always are the two entwined:

A Souvenir, a stand of pines.

The forests of South Wales where I heard Souvenir by OMD.

The Garden and the Grave

Descend again, subduct and sink.

Those final fingertips above:

An instant recalled and then let slip,

A moment more of autumn sun.

Then dragged beyond sensation’s grip

Through hollowed, lithospheric worlds –

A numbed and empty being lost –

Alone, chthonic, left to lust.

The deeper days have taken you.

Through shadowed halls of hanging trees

Your heart’s tectonics shift and drag.

You grow accustomed to your bed.

The crystals glint their soulless stars.

The Earth will give, the Earth will wait.

The Ritual of Autumn (How All Things End)

At last the autumn takes its toll:

The gaudy flush of leaves are down,

And weary frauds of summer burst.

We’re left to face the coming cold.

The monotone of honest skies,

Is dampening out all thoughts of growth.

The facts of death are plain and fair,

With brittle bark, revealed and bare,

The bed is warm, the fire is old.

What better place to turn away,

To run the thoughts that autumn brings,

Of things that mattered but are gone.

If change were worth the while we’d change,

But now we know how all things end.

The Song of Ondine (Tundra Swans)

She called them down, the winter swans,

To gather on her flooded fields.

The final touch of Autumn sun

Made strings of pearls from lines of birds.

She whispered knowledge through the flocks:

A dew as soft as cotton grass,

She brought the sound of distant waves,

And samphire scented morning mists.

The fields spread out from hills to sea,

And on each field a thousand swans,

A thousand tundra tales to tell,

And with each tale she made a song.

They stayed through snows the Winter long,

Lamenting wilderness and sun.
